1871 dress, ball gown version

The ball gown bodice was also made using the same 1870-71 dress pattern from Patterns of Fashion. I altered only the size. It's lined with cotton sateen and boned only on center front. It also closes with hooks and eyelets.

The making of:

The bodice has piping on the top edge and around armholes.

  1. This is absolutely stunning! I am completely inspired by your work. I recently bought Patterns of Fashion 2 with the intention of making this dress and it looks even more beautiful than I imagined. If you don't mind me asking, how do you alter the size (and do you know what the original pattern size is?). Do you basically just keep adding inches until it fits.

    1. Thank you!

The original waist size was very close to mine, but I had to make some adjustments to the shoulders and sleeves, lengthen the bodice about an inch and add a few inches to the center front to accommodate a larger bust size. Then I just pinned the darts and center front edges to fit. The original waist is about 23 inches and bust about 33 inches if I remember correctly.

  2. What type of fabric did you use for this? It's beautiful, as is your 1870-80 corset. I'm an amateur historic sewer too!
